Sharing life with an animal friend brings excellent joy and fulfils an important social function for people living alone, especially older people. Despite this, we must never forget that we have a great responsibility towards our furry friends: they are part of the family and must not lack affection and care!
Let us see which unconventional pets can best adapt to domestic life and analyse their needs.
Unconventional pets
The Fennec fox
Although most foxes are not ideal pets, the Fennec fox is a perfect choice! This cute desert animal tends to be relatively small (smaller than a cat) and very intelligent.
We can even teach him to use the litter box. The Fennec fox is playful, requires a lot of exercise and is not dangerous to humans. As an adult, it reaches the weight and size of a Chihuahua.
The capybara
Although the capybara is a rodent, it is not comparable to a guinea pig or a hamster. It grows to 135 cm and weighs 65 kilos. In some countries, it is illegal to have a capybara in the home ( e.g., it has been banned in Italy since 1996), so it is best to find out about the law before choosing it from our list of unusual pets. Capybaras require a lot of attention and care and need a lot of space and a pool or pond.
The miniature donkey
The miniature donkey is found in many species worldwide but derives from the Sardinian donkey. This type of donkey is cute and furry; if we want to choose it as a pet, we should also take a companion. It is, in fact, an animal that cannot live alone and, despite its small size, needs a lot of space. They are usually about one metre tall and weigh about 150 kilos.
Donkeys are perfect for children and are not a danger to humans.
The pygmy goat
The pygmy goat needs a lot of care. It is very playful and active, and despite its small size (some breeds reach a height of 35 cm, others do not exceed 60 cm), it can sometimes be very noisy. Just like donkeys, it cannot stand solitude!
Before choosing it, ensure you have plenty of space, grass, hay and leaves. Furthermore, the structure we want to house these animals must be sturdy, as they tend to escape quickly.
The hedgehog
It is illegal to keep hedgehogs in captivity in some countries. However, despite its famous thorns, hedgehogs are amicable and know how to become attached to their owners. They are perfect pets because they are quiet and need little care but require attention, especially as babies.
Be careful, however: they are nocturnal animals, so if you want to sleep peacefully, they are not suitable pets.
The Genet
The Genet is a mammal native to Africa. It is a perfect pet for those who like to be constantly on the move and never stop! It is very active and robust. Its appearance is very curious, so much so that it resembles a cross between a ferret, a cat, and a raccoon. At home, it prefers to be the only pet.
In ancient times, genets seemed to be domesticated to keep rodents away, even before cats. Since the genet is an exotic animal, it should always be checked whether keeping it in one’s own country is possible.
Other unconventional pets
The sugar Glider
This cute little animal, also known as the ‘flying squirrel’, is very agile despite its sweet appearance, so much so that it can leap and glide up to 70-80 cm, despite being very small (about 70-80 g). These little creatures are constantly looking for attention and cuddles. They will bring you much joy if you decide to have them in your home.
They are incredibly playful and loyal and can even learn tricks and games! They are one of the best pets to choose for families with older children and for those who are single, but remember that they are nocturnal and, therefore, tend to stay awake at night. Think carefully before choosing them!
The tarantula
Giant spiders are undoubtedly unique and can make perfect pets. However, one must first understand which species can be kept indoors. Mexican tarantulas with red knees and curly hair are flawless. They feed on live insects and are not suitable for the pickiest of owners. Many people find tarantulas terrifying, but they can be fascinating companions.
The boa constrictor
Snakes are not ideal pets, but boa constrictors are much friendlier than other snakes! They are perfect and safe as unusual pets; the only real problem is their size: they can get huge!
