Notice from the RSPCA. The scorching heat can be a silent killer for your dog.

Dangerous heat for dogs. UK dog owners have warned about a ‘silent killer’ as the country prepares for sizzling temperatures this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a four-day yellow warning for extreme heat in parts of England and Wales from Thursday to Sunday, with temperatures expected to rise to 35°C or even 36°C in some places. But dog owners are urged to watch their four-legged friends as temperatures rise again.

The hot weather has sparked an alarm from dog specialists at the RSPCA.

Esme Wheeler said, “Walking dogs in hot weather can be a ‘silent killer.” While most would never leave their dogs in the car on a hot day or even take their dogs for a long walk in the heat, many people might still put their dogs at risk even on a short walk or take them to places like fields and beaches with little or no shade.

We have long argued that dogs die in hot cars, but this year, we are pointing out that dogs also die on hot walks. The message remains straightforward: never leave a dog in a hot car because ‘not long is too long, and when it comes to walks, ‘don’t go out when in doubt.

Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor of Pet Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, added: ‘Heat-related illnesses can lead to organ failure, brain damage, and death.

Most people know that dogs die in hot cars. Still, the reality is that more than ten times more dogs need veterinary treatment for heat-related illnesses after exercise than after overheating in a vehicle.

“It can take weeks for a dog to acclimatise to the heat, so after a period of cold weather, periods of hot weather can be perilous.”
